From Middle English intertenere, from the Latin prefix inter meaning “inside,” and ten, from the Indo-European root of “to hold.” The word has come to mean anything that holds people’s attention, or keeps them amused. The word is flexible enough to cover the whole range of human activity: a private entertainment on a small scale, such as a meal for two; the theatrical productions adapted to any size audience; or the spectacles that can draw millions on a global level.
