The Daily News of New York

The Daily News is an American morning tabloid newspaper founded in 1919 in New York City as the Illustrated Daily News by Joseph Medill Patterson. The first successful tabloid in the United States, the paper quickly grew in circulation and prestige, attracting readers with sensational coverage of crime and scandal, lurid photographs, and cartoons and entertainment features. It also covered national and international events.

From the beginning, the Daily News emphasized writing talent and attracted prominent writers to its staff. The News also cultivated a reputation for excellence in foreign reporting and established an extensive network of correspondents. In the 1920s it was one of the first to use the Associated Press wirephoto service, building up a staff of top photographers and developing its own photographic lab.

By the end of the 20th century, the Daily News had lost its lead in circulation to a more sensational rival, but it still maintained a strong presence in the city’s news market. In the early days of the electronic era, it was a leader in computerization and was among the first to publish news online.

Today, the Daily News continues to be an important source of local and national news for many New Yorkers. It is a major provider of breaking news and sports and it also offers in-depth coverage of politics, the economy, and social issues. In addition to its flagship Manhattan location, the paper has bureaus in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. It also maintains a radio station, WPIX-FM, which carries its AM namesake call letters.

The Yale Daily News has been the primary source of news and debate at Yale since 1878, and is the oldest college daily in the United States. The News is a nonpartisan, independent student publication that is published each weekday during the academic year. The newspaper strives to represent the diversity of the Yale community and encourages student submissions from across all backgrounds and interests. It has been the training ground for generations of journalists and public servants, including William F. Buckley, Lan Samantha Chang, John Hersey, Sargent Shriver, Paul Steiger, Strobe Talbott, Garry Trudeau and others.
