Entertaiment

Article: Entertaiment

In an age of rapidly evolving technologies and increasing cultural homogenization, the familiar forms of entertainment seem to have an unlimited capacity for creative remix. This ability to cross-over between media has ensured that entertainment is able to evolve and adapt, even as it retains certain characteristics of form and structure that are consistent and timeless.

Entertaiment is a complex concept that can mean different things to different people. For some it is watching a movie or playing video games for pleasure. For others it might be listening to music, attending a dance performance or reading for entertainment. For still others it might be attending a sporting event, or creating or appreciating visual art.

The word comes from the Medieval Latin intertenere, derived from the prefix inter meaning “inside,” and the suffix ten, a form of the Indo-European root ten, which means “to hold inside.” It suggests that entertainment should be able to hold inside and transform its audience.
