The New York Daily News was established in 1919 and is currently owned by Tronc, a Chicago-based media company. The newspaper is known for its sensational crime and scandal coverage, its large and prominent photographs, and celebrity gossip and comics. It was once the largest-selling newspaper in the United States, but has since lost much of its market share to its more conservative rival, The New York Post. The Daily News is based in the historic Daily News Building on 42nd Street in Manhattan, designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood and built in 1929. It was the model for the Daily Planet building in the first two Superman films. The News was also the founder of WPIX-TV and owns the radio station WFAN. In addition to its daily newspaper, the Daily News publishes several special interest publications. It is one of the few remaining major American newspapers to still have a printing plant. In recent years it has begun to focus more on community-based journalism.
