The Daily News
Daily News is a morning daily tabloid newspaper published in New York City. It was founded in 1919 as the Illustrated Daily News by Joseph Medill Patterson and is a subsidiary of the Tribune Company of Chicago. It reached its peak circulation of 2.4 million copies a day in 1947 and as of 2019, it was the eleventh-largest newspaper in the United States.
The paper’s editorial stance is a mix of moderately conservative populism and liberal politics, although it has been described as “flexibly centrist” by the New York Times. In the 1940s through the 1970s, it was a staunchly Republican paper. Its editorial stance was often in line with that of its sister publication, the Chicago Tribune.
Since its founding, the paper has maintained local bureaus throughout the New York metropolitan area. Its headquarters are based at 450 West 33rd Street, which straddles the Pennsylvania Station railroad tracks and is also the world headquarters of the Associated Press (AP). The paper also has local bureaus in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens, as well as a large international bureau in Washington, D.C. The Daily News has a radio and television station, WPIX, in the former Daily News Building; these are both owned by the Tribune Company, which publishes it.
